Rolling up our sleeves for NHI

A strong public health infrastructure is needed if the country is to successfully implement National Health Insurance (NHI).

NHI is a preventive health scheme that will ensure quality healthcare is available to all, regardless of economic or financial means. While the state contributes about 40% of all expenditure on health, the public health sector is under pressure to deliver services to about 80% of the population.

When the new government took office in 1994, we inherited an unequal public health system, fraught in some cases with serious neglect.
