Painting the Dalai Lama’s moral picture

My family owns a well-known restaurant and take-away on the main road leading into Pietermaritzburg's CBD.

The outside walls of the building are about 18 metres wide.

So when the Dalai Lama was denied access into the country in 2011 for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s 80th birthday, my father seized the opportunity to showcase his face, somehow.

He allowed an artist, who had approached him earlier that week, to paint a massive portrait of the Tibetan holy man on the upper walls, outside the shop.
