However, during Schabir Shaik’s corruption trial in 2005 the public became aware of question marks over Jacob Zuma’s integrity. Now the endgame is at hand – but it will only be checkmate for Zuma if all the pieces in our criminal justice system stick to the rules.

When Shaik, Zuma’s crooked financial adviser, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, Thabo Mbeki correctly relieved Zuma of the country’s deputy presidency.
