Nzimande scrapes barrel bottom

Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education and general secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP), is getting desperate in defence of the indefensible.

He insults black and white alike when he says reports about misspending on Nkandla are “white people’s lies”.

The most comprehensive report on Nkandla is by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

In order to portray her comprehensive 447-page document as “white” lies you’d also have to besmirch her by saying she is doing the work of whites.

Yet in fact criticism of Nkandla knows no colour bar. Even influential people of all races in the ANC have been critical.

The most significant lies about Nkandla have come from President Jacob Zuma himself.

He lied to Parliament, even if Madonsela leniently said he did not do so deliberately.

Nzimande, like the rest of the SACP, has no significant constituency.

He has thrown his weight fully behind Zuma, without whom he is lost. That is why he is so vehement in supporting the embattled president.

In doing so he has allowed his already shaky judgment to become further impaired.

South Africans should not be distracted by his low-level race baiting.
