The department of international relations said on Friday morning it was still waiting for a report on the Malaysia Airlines plane that went down in Ukraine to see if any South Africans were on board.

“We are waiting for a response from our mission in Kuala Lumpur to see if there were any South Africans aboard the plane,” spokesman Nelson Kgwete said.

It was reported on Friday that one South African was on the plane.

According to news agency Agence France-Presse, 298 people were on board when the airplane was allegedly shot down over Ukraine on Thursday by a surface-to-air missile.

The Ukrainian government as well as pro-Russian separatists fighting the government have denied any responsibility for the alleged attack on the passenger plane that was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
