The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) has called for an investigation after accusing pro-government militiamen of carrying out a massacre against civilians in Wau State in two separate attacks over the weekend.
In a statement, the SPLM-IO asserted that during a Saturday assault by pro-government forces dressed as civilians on Dang Achan village, 15 civilians were killed, six women and 13 children were kidnapped, and 21 civilians injured, the Sudan Tribune reported.
SPLM-IO Director for Information and Public Relations Puok Baluang said a similar attack also took place on a camp for Internally Displaced Peoples in Maranyi, Wau State, on Sunday, which claimed 15 civilians lives and injured a further 20 people.
Bualang called for a prompt investigation into the attacks and the prosecution of those responsible by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring Mechanism in South Sudan.
The kidnapping of children in South Sudan has been a rising phenomenon during the country’s civil war, which erupted in 2013, with as many as 19,000 pressed into military service.
