A case of house robbery has been opened after three men, allegedly wearing full police uniform with their faces covered, held a family at gunpoint in Montford, KwaZulu-Natal.
The suspects ransacked the house and fled the scene in the victims’ vehicles, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.
The family believes that the Hindu deity, Lord Hanuman saved them from a gang of ruthless balaclava-clad robbers, pretending to be policemen, who held them up at gunpoint in their two-bedroom home on Tuesday night.
The brazen robbery took place when Vishen Ganesan, 40, was downstairs while his wife, mother-in-law, son and niece were upstairs.
A distraught Ganesan said there was nothing unusual that night.
Ganesen said, “The front door was open and I was watching TV when three armed men dressed in police uniforms entered my home and instructed me to lie flat on the floor.”
Ganesan, who is a devout Hindu, said everything happened so quickly.
“My main gate to the driveway is always locked, but nevertheless, three men jumped over the wall and stormed into my home. They ordered me to lie on the floor and said it was a robbery. I was shaken with fear. While one robber held a gun to my head, another robber went upstairs. One of them began to gather valuables in my kitchen,” Ganesan said.
Ganesan’s niece and son, who were awake at the time of the incident, were sent downstairs to join the rest of the family members on the ground. When the robbers gathered the valuables, they instructed Ganesan to give them the keys to his two cars and the driveway gate. They started to pack the valuables into the ix35 and started the Nissan Tida car.
“One of my friends, who noticed this, began hooting. The robbers then went to his vehicle and ordered him to jump out of his car and dragged him in the house. They stole his car and the ix35 and left the Nissan Tida behind. They stole more than six cellphones, two TVs, microwaves and more valuables,” he added.
He said that residents should be aware of their surroundings at all times. They should treat every person as a stranger even if they are dressed in police uniform. His mother-in-law said it’s the divine intervention of their faith in Lord Hanuman which saved them from being killed or hurt.
Meanwhile the communications officer of eThekwini Inner South cluster, Priya Nunkumar confirmed that a case of house robbery had been opened at Chatsworth police.
