Two people died after the car they were in left the road, rolled down an embankment, and plunged into a river in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday morning.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the vehicle on its roof, submerged in water in the Alexandra Park area, ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said.

A bystander helped a paramedic remove the driver from the vehicle.

“Upon assessment of the man, believed to be in his 20s, it was found that he showed no signs of life. Paramedics began resuscitation and transported him to hospital. However, despite all efforts to save him he sadly died in hospital.

“Sadly there was nothing that could be done for a woman who was also found in the vehicle. Search and rescue removed her body from the vehicle.”

Two other women managed to get out of the vehicle. They were transported to hospital for further assessment. The cause of the accident was unknown, Bodasing said.
