A 17-year-old boy from Kagiso, in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand died after a strong gust of wind blew down a wall, resulting in it collapsing on the teenager and his friend yesterday, Kagiso police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya told Krugersdorp News.
The boy and his friend were exiting Kagiso Mall when the wind started to blow up. The strong wind forced them to take cover at one side of the wall when tragedy struck.
“The wall allegedly collapsed and fell onto the two boys. The deceased was certified dead on the scene by the paramedics,” added Sibiya.
The deceased’s friend was left with a lower leg and ankle injury. He is in a stable condition in hospital, Sibiya said.
An inquest docket has been opened.
In a separate incident, several men were seriously injured after a wall collapsed onto scaffolding in Boskruin, Randburg, last year.
Netcare911 spokesperson Santie Stienmann said paramedics found the “scene strewn with bricks and building materials”.
Eight men were injured during the collapse.
“Upon assessment of the men they found that six men sustained serious injuries and two men sustained moderate injuries,” said Stienmann.
The injured patients were treated on scene and transported to various hospitals.
