Insurers scrambles after mega-hail storm

Business reporter

Insurance companies have had to step up a gear after the devastating storm that pelted the West Rand with chicken-egg-sized hailstones on Thursday.

The storms, high wind and hail swept across the West Rand, Roodepoort, Kagiso, Mamelodi, Pretoria, Krugersdorp and Randfontein.

With heavy clouds threatening again yesterday and more rain forecast for the weekend, residents are bracing themselves for more weather damage.

Standard Bank said yesterday it had invoked its “catastrophe plan” to increase the capacity of its call centres after more than 3 000 calls jammed its switchboard in the wake of the storm – 1 500 in a single hour.

Denise Shaw, Head of Standard Bank Insurance Services, said little doubt existed that insurance companies “will be facing claims that will run into millions of rands – a final figure will only become apparent after all claims are attended to”.
