A robber has been shot dead during an armed robbery at the Sasol Garage in Vuyile Mini Street, Bethal in Mpumalanga Ridge Times reported.

Bethal police spokesperson Constable Thomas Mogadime said six robbers approached G4S personnel while they were uploading collected money on Sunday.

He said the robbers stole the money and began to fire shots.

During the shoot-out between G4S personnel and the robbers, a man was shot in the leg at Sasol Garage.

The driver of the G4S truck chased after a suspect who was firing at another guard and managed to shoot back. The other robbers got away.

Paramedics were immediately on the scene and the injured man was taken to the hospital.

“It happened very fast and the other men in the grey car tried to fetch the suspect, but was too late,” said an anonymous car guard.

Vuyile Mini Street was closed off for more than five hours so that police officers could investigate the scene.

“We will be experiencing a lot of criminal activities in the area during the festive season and the police will do their best to prevent all sorts of crime,” added Mogadime.

Police are investigating a case of robbery and no arrests have been made.

In a separate incident, a suspect was shot and killed in a shootout between cash-in-transit security guards and four suspects on Claim Street in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, early this year.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said four suspects attempted to rob security guards carrying money. Shots were fired and one suspect was shot and killed.
