Igesund goes for tried-and-tested

Gordon Igesund has given a glimpse into the future in terms of the players he may select for next year's Chan tournament.

The Bafana Bafana coach yesterday announced a 24-man squad to play Swaziland in a friendly international on November 15.

Orlando Pirates players dominate the squad with Igesund calling up nine players from Roger de Sa’s side. Striker Lennox Bacela has been called up for the first time and team-mate Rooi Mahamutsa has also been selected.

This game in Mbabane is one which the coach could have used to extend the pool of players he already has for the national side. But instead he has opted for tried-and-tested players like Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker and Thabo Matlala.

Ahead of their friendly against Morocco in Agadir last month, Igesund picked a few young players whom he said were the future. And the expectations for Swaziland was that he would continue on that path.

Better still, the players who finished third in the Cosafa Cup in July, were also an option.

But from that squad the coach called on seven players.

“I am trying to get my squad together for the Chan tournament and I do not have time,” he said yesterday.

The availability of players for the tournament, which is not Fifa- sanctioned, is something Igesund has yet to make sure does not affect him when it starts.

“The PSL and Safa are still negotiating for the release of players for the tournament,” he said.

Bafana are in Group A for the competition, which is secondary to the African Cup of Nations, and are pitted against Mali, Nigeria and Mozambique. Igesund will announce his squad for the friendly against world champions Spain on Thursday.
