DA MP Diane Kohler Barnard said yesterday she was utterly, utterly stunned” by the early release of the police crime statistics.

“For the third year in a row the SAPS have blundered, first they used the incorrect census data, then they gave us the incorrect figures for Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal – and now this!,” said Kohler-Barnard.

“This shows once more that this is nothing but a circus performance by the SAPS top management, who have hired such utter incompetents that they have posted this information 12 hours beforehand.  If they can’t manage such a simple task as maintaining radio silence, then what credibility can we possibly give to the crime statistics?”

“These figures, however they came to be posted on the SAPS website, show that we are now at the catastrophic state of having 49 of us murdered each and every day,” Kohler-Barnard said.

She said  60% of the measured crimes had increased, while 40% have declined.  The Department of Education may be satisfied with a 40% pass rate, but it won’t satisfy the millions of South Africans who live paralysed with the fear of becoming just another statistic.”

An apparent slip saw some of the national police crime statistics being released late last night on the SAPS website ahead of the presentation today.
