The arrest happened after members of the KwaMsane tactical response team and the Empangeni crime intelligence unit conducted a search for the suspect in the KwaMtholo area.
“Police proceeded to KwaMtholo area, KwaMsane where they spotted a vehicle with a man and a search was conducted,” police spokesman Thulani Zwane said.
“A 37-year-old man was found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and 32 live rounds of ammunition. The recovered firearms were 9mm pistol and .38 revolver.”
The man was arrested on charges of possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of suspected stolen property after officers discovered the car he was driving had been tampered with.
“The seized firearm will be sent to ballistics to ascertain if it was used in any killings and any other crimes in the country,” Zwane said.
The suspect was expected to appear in the Mtubatuba Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
