The robbers forced their way into the lorry and robbed the driver of about R1 500.

Mokgale said as the robbers tried to force their way into the back of the lorry to gain access to the safe, the driver managed to flee and sought assistance at Jeppe police station.

Officers from Cleveland police station also responded to the radio alert and arrived at the scene.

During the shootout that followed, a warrant officer from the Cleveland police station was shot in the neck.
