Mashaba died during a car crash last night on the N2 in Ballito while travelling back to Richards Bay from King Shaka Airport in Durban on Thursday night. He was travelling with two bodyguards when the car apparently rolled several times, ejecting all the occupants from the vehicle, Zululand Observer Reported.

“His untimely passing has robbed the ANC and the entire country of a dedicated leader who had a clear vision of taking the movement and the citizens of this country forward,” said Zikalala.

“Our hearts are bleeding heavily and engulfed by sorrow as we remember the good work Comrade Mashaba has done as a leader in the ANC.”

Zikalala praised Mashaba’s dedication and willingness to positively respond to any tasks the ANC had requested of him.

“His main objective has always been serving the people with distinction and dignity,” the statement continued.

“The ANC sends its condolences to the family friends. All our prayers and thoughts are with them at this dark hour.”

Meanwhile KZN transport MEC Willies Mchunu said he had been left saddened by Mashaba’s passing.

“We are devastated at the loss of Comrade Mashaba, a young and energetic leader with immense potential. As a nation, we are poorer without him,” Mchunu said.

KZN provincial spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the accident took place at about 10pm and that police were investigating.
