IPSS Medical Rescue reported that a BMW X5 was travelling from King Shaka Airport on the N2 North at about 10pm when the vehicle lost control and rolled several times before coming to a standstill in a ditch just before the Ballito offramp, Zululand Observer reported.

Mashaba was traveling with two bodyguards when the car apparently rolled several times, ejecting all the occupants from the vehicle.

“The bodyguards were in a critical condition and treated by advanced life support paramedics before being transported to hospital,” IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said.

“Unfortunately deputy mayor was declared dead on scene.”

KZN provincial spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that the accident took place around 10pm and that police are investigating.

Mashaba was also the ANC regional chairperson for the Musa Dladla region. The ANC is expected to issue a statement on the accident later on after senior leaders have visited the family.
