Joseph Phukube, a homeless man who took to the streets of Johannesburg with his matric certificate with the hope of finding a job, has received more than 1 000 replies and job offers after images of him went viral on social media.

The 22-year-old Phukube, originally from Mpumalanga, was noticed by Sandton resident Pam Green, who saw his matric certificate and CV and posted a picture of him on Facebook, Sandton Chronicle reported.

Green said she asked 20 of her friends to share the post to help Phukube find employment. Following the initial post on June 29, the post has been shared more than 22 500 times on Facebook.

Since then, Phukube has reportedly received more than 1 000 responses and job offers ranging from call centre agent positions to scholarship offers at various institutions. Phukube said his dream job was in marketing.

“I love new challenges, especially ones that will help me experience new things in life. I also like the chance to change businesses and come up with new ideas,” he said.

He added he was completely overwhelmed by the response his story received and was searching for accommodation and preparing for meetings with different possible employers.

Green added she was also calling on the community to send through any donations of blankets or clothing for him by contacting her via e-mail at pam.grauman@gmail.com
