Following reports of a customer finding raw pieces of chicken inside their meal, a customer at the Wimpy restaurant in Montecasino, in Johannesburg, was horrified to discover her chicken schnitzel was raw after she had already taken two bites.
Renay Mahrajh posted images of the undercooked chicken schnitzel on a local restaurant review page on Facebook, along with the caption, “Raw chicken at Wimpy Montecasino … terrible service and arrogant management”, City Buzz reported.
Mahrajh said she notified the two managers who were on duty and spoke to the owner via cellphone after she insisted a manager call him. She added her son had a runny stomach about an-hour-and-a-half after the meal.
“The owner said ‘sorry’ and that I can have a free meal, like that will help my boy.” She was offered the meal free of charge but claimed the situation had not been properly addressed.
“I can confirm and based on the photos provided, the Crumbed chicken provided to Mrs Renay Marahajh was in fact undercooked. I take full responsibility for this as I am the owner of the Wimpy in Monte Casino. I do, however not feel that it was due to negligence. It was an honest mistake,” said owner of the Wimpy branch, Kumaran Govender.
Govender admitted that his managers initial response was not adequate, however one of the other managers stepped in and resolved the situation amicably.
“The franchisor had been informed about the incident and that an operations team is being sent in to review the cooking procedures to ensure that all the staff are adhering to the correct standards. Based on my own investigation, it appears that the temperature of my dedicated fryer in which we cook our crumbed chicken was set too high and this caused the chicken to cook fast on the outside and failed to thoroughly cook the middle part of the chicken. Personally from my side, I have taken the necessary measures to ensure that this does not happen again,” he said.
Govender added: “I acknowledge that this incident was an unfortunate one. Both my staff and I pride ourselves in what we do and feel that this was an honest mistake which we dealt with in store. I again wish to use this platform to apologise to Mrs Renay Marahajh for the incident and we will certainly look forward to ensure that this does not happen again. Our reputation and the Wimpy Brands reputation is of upmost importance to me as this is my livelihood.”
This after a KFC customer in Three Rivers, Vereeniging, posted a picture of a meal that allegedly had raw pieces of chicken.
The customer, Wayne Smith, from Vanderbijilpark, in the Vaal, on Tuesday, June 2, posted a picture of a Twister that seemingly had raw chicken in it. “My raw twister. Thanks KFC,” Smith said in a Facebook post.
Managing director of KFC, Doug Smart, said the head office had been made aware of the incident and were conducting an investigation.
According to Smart, each KFC restaurant is independently evaluated through unannounced audits throughout the year to ensure they adhere to “the strictest health and safety procedures”.
