A woman appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court today after she was arrested for allegedly abandoning her two-year-old son.

The boy was found by a community member walking along Vorster Avenue in Glenanda, south of Johannesburg, on Friday evening, Comaro Chronicle reported.

She was arrested by Mondeor police late on Saturday afternoon after she was found on Saturday by a patroller in The Hill area.

Michelle Pelser, from Mondeor Community Police Forum, said she had been working with Mondeor police since Friday to locate the woman.

“It’s been a team effort; everyone has pulled together and assisted with this case. Thanks to Mondeor SAPS, Mondeor Community Police Forum and the community,” Michelle added.

The boy is believed to be receiving care at a place of safety.

This after a case of child abandonment was opened by police in Montclair, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, after a three-day-old infant was found in a hostel in January.

A security guard found the abandoned infant while patrolling at the SJ Smith hostel in the Jacobs area. The security guard allegedly heard the baby crying and contacted police, who then took the baby boy to the Montclair Police Station.
