Gunther Bühner, principal of the Nic Diederichs Technical High School in Krugersdorp, was among those who were killed in the crash, Krugersdorp News reported.
A friend of Bühner and her five-year-old child were among the six who tragically died in the accident. Emergency services Netcare 911 and ER24 arrived on the scene, where they found the two light motor vehicles that had collided. Four people, among them two teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16, were still alive but had sustained injuries.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and their rescue unit arrived at the scene and found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles, one of the wreckages was engulfed in flames, with three people still trapped in the wreckage, which was later extinguished by the fire services.
“Some of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle and were found several metres away; two people were still trapped in the wreckage of the second vehicle,” Botha said.
According to Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, paramedics assessed the occupants from the smoldering vehicle and discovered that three occupants had sustained fatal burn injuries. Two other occupants were found to have sustained critical injuries in the collision.
He said paramedics immediately began their treatment on the critically injured patients, providing them with advanced life support treatment.
“Once treated, they were immobilised and transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment,” he said.
