Six men were refused bail at the Richards Bay Magistrates’ Court after they allegedly stabbed a man to death when he attempted to resolve a brawl between revellers in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Richards Bay police said the 33-year-old victim was struck with a knobkierrie to the head and knifed to death in a parking lot in front of Richards Bay nightclub Lion’s Den at about 5am on Sunday, Zululand Observer reported.

The suspects appeared in court on Tuesday on charges of murder.

Siyanda Bila, 20, Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, 24, Philani Mkhize, 18, Sibonelo Mthethwa, 19, Sthembiso Mthethwa, 18, and a 16-year-old minor whose name may not be revealed will appear again in court on June 22.

In a separate incident, two suspects were on the run after allegedly assaulting a 23-year-old man at New York Club in Douglasdale, near Fourways, Johannesburg, last month.

According to a Facebook post by the man’s father, the manager of the club, along with the bouncers and other patrons, did nothing to assist during the alleged assault. It is unclear what led to the reported altercation.

“In this case, as far as we know, my son was innocent and assaulted for no reason. Also, as far as we know, the investigation is ongoing. The bouncers, club manager and even the resident DJ did nothing to protect him. In fact, it seems that they got involved and partook in the assault,” the father said.

Douglasdale police spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan confirmed that one suspect was out on bail on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while two other suspects were still on the run.
