A 19-year-old man is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court today after he allegedly stabbed and killed a teenage boy in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday.

The alleged murder happened after thousands of would-be concert goers discovered the annual Ukhozi FM Concert, which is traditionally held on the last Sunday of the Royal Agricultural Show, was not taking place on that day, Public Eye Maritzburg reported.

Despite that, the revellers turned up outside the showground vicinity and partied on the streets. The hordes of attendees reportedly turned the field opposite the Invesco centre into a makeshift party zone, which soon descended into chaos as violence broke out. The young man, identified only as “Themba”, was apparently attacked and stabbed repeatedly.

Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the victim was declared dead on the scene by paramedics at about 6pm. “The motive of the incident is unknown at this stage,” Zwane added.

Meanwhile, Ukhozi FM and the SABC have distanced themselves from the incident.“The event was not an Ukhozi FM event. We therefore cannot comment further on what happened,” SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said.

He added the actual even was scheduled to take place this coming weekend.
