According to Norkem Park police spokesperson, Captain Lesibana Molokomme, Ekurhuleni Metro police officers were driving behind a red VW microbus with school children inside on Tuesday, Kempton Express reported.

“Upon noticing the driver swerving the vehicle all over the road, EMPD officers stopped the car,” Molokomme said.

When the officers approached the driver, he allegedly smelled of alcohol and could not speak properly. “A sample of his blood was taken for further investigations,” Molokomme said.

In a separate incident on the same day, another driver was arrested for speeding and allegedly failing to stop at all stop signs along Mooifontein Road in Kempton Park. The driver also had two school children inside the vehicle.

“Metro police officers spotted the white Toyota Corolla around 3pm, switched their blue lights and sirens on, and gave a brief chase after the vehicle, finally bringing it to a stop on Pongolarivier Drive, Birch Acres,” Molokomme added.

The 28-year-old driver is expected to appear in court, facing a charge of reckless and negligent driving. All the children were taken to their respective destinations safely.
