Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya said it is alleged the victim was walking along Steyn Road on Tuesday, when two men suddenly attacked him demanding money and his cellphone, Krugersdorp News reported.

“They assaulted him before fleeing the scene with cash amounting to R19 000 and his cellphone,” added Ngwenya.

Ngwenya said police received a tip-off which led to the arrest of the suspects. Both suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates` Court soon, facing common robbery charges.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested after a woman was robbed of her cellphone in central Johannesburg in March. Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the 53-year-old woman was robbed at the corner of Commissioner and Von Weilligh streets.

“She felt someone putting his hand into her handbag and take her cellphone. She screamed for help and the security came to her rescue and chased a suspect,” added Mbele. The police joined the security guards and a 26-year-old man was arrested. He was charged with common robbery. The cellphone was not recovered.
