A motorist has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide after he ran over and killed a one-year-old girl in Sandringham, Johannesburg on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the man had reversed into a driveway on Kent Avenue when he hit the child, North Eastern Tribune reported.

The driver reportedly claimed he did not see the girl.

A security guard, who was stationed nearby at the time of the incident, said he heard a car stop and beep, and then he heard a woman scream before hearing a woman scream.

Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said paramedics were called to the scene where the child was declared dead.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed that the incident was under investigation and said the department sent their deepest condolences to the family who lost their child.

In a recent incident, one-year-old boy died after he was run over by a vehicle in a driveway in Constantia, Western Cape earlier this month.

“The exact cause of the incident is not yet known, however it is understood that the child might have been behind a vehicle when it reversed in a driveway,” ER24 said in a statement.

The child died on arrival at hospital.
