Democratic Alliance MPL Anthony Benadie welcomed the appointment, saying on Monday it was a step in the right direction.

“Mr Lubisi comes with a vast set of skills and institutional knowledge,” Benadie said in a statement.

“He served as the speaker of the Mpumalanga legislature for two terms, and was also the MEC of economic development and planning as well as an MEC of health and social development.”

In May, chairwoman of the MTPA board Clara Ndlovu was fired for suspending chief executive Jacques Modipane.

Modipane was removed after 112 pieces of rhino horn were stolen from the agency.

The Saturday Star at the time reported that economic development and tourism MEC Pinky Phosa removed Ndlovu for contravening the MTPA Act by suspending Jacques Modipane without consultation.

The CEO’s office of the MTPA confirmed the appointment.

“That’s true, the appointment was affective September 1,” it said.
