The province recorded 41 fatal crashes, which left 51 people dead.

The growing number of road facilities in Gauteng is disappointing, the province’s executive has said, citing deaths recorded during an extended weekend after the country commemorated 24 years of democracy on Friday.

The province said law enforcement agencies arrested 252 drunk drivers across the City of Johannesburg alone, while the province recorded 41 fatal crashes which left 51 people dead.

“Many accidents were caused by over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving unroadworthy vehicle amongst others,” the member of the executive committee for community safety in Gauteng province Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said.
