Information supplied by community members in Strand, Cape Town led to the arrest of a man for being in possession of an illegal firearm on Saturday afternoon, Western Cape police said.
“In order to prevent and combat crime that may threaten the safety and security of community members police from Strand acted swiftly today [Friday] at [12.40pm] and arrested a 31-year-old man for being in possession of a Norinco firearm without a license,” Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said.
Police officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Broadlands Park in Strand when they were informed by community members about a man who was in possession of a firearm without a license.
“It was later discovered that the firearm had been reported as stolen in a Nyanga case. The suspect was arrested and will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 8 May 2017. Illegal firearms cause terror and heartache among communities in areas where violent crime is rife,” Rwexana said.
