A jewellery shop at the Liberty Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg, in KwaZulu-Natal, was robbed on Tuesday morning when the centre opened for business.
Police are on the hunt for four suspects, all wearing maroon jackets and caps who are believed to be behind the robbery.
Photographs that have emerged show the four suspects pushing a trolley and running out through an exit point at the mall near the Factorie shop before making a hasty get-away in a white Audi.
Witnesses said they saw three men carrying a large bag enter the shop and grab jewellery that had been put on the display window.
They said the robbers filled the bag and then left pushing out a trolley.
Police arrived 20 minutes later, and no injuries were sustained.
The mall was shut down.
Terrified early morning shoppers said they feared for their lives and did not know what was going on but just heard a huge uproar, Public Eye Maritzburg reported.
The store remains closed together with other jewellery stores in the vicinity.
It is believed the suspects fled the scene in a white Audi.
