UPDATE: Identity of 3-year-old flood victim confirmed

DNA results confirmed her identity, and police have taken the family to the mortuary.

The body of a child found along the Jukskei River in Alexandra has been confirmed as that of three-year-old Everite Chauke who was swept away during flash floods on November 9.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said DNA results from Police Forensic Lab confirmed the identity, and the police had taken the family, originally from Zimbabwe, to the government mortuary, Alex News reported.

Ward 109 councillor Werner Smit said the body was found by a worker cleaning next to the river two weeks after the incident.

Councillor Adolph Marema also confirmed the finding, saying the MMC for community development Nonhlanhla Sifumba committed the City to help with the funeral, which will be held at the Marlboro Cemetery, and the date will be announced soon.
