The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm that’s possibly the same one used in the crime.

A brave police officer chased an armed suspect in the Umbilo area in Durban after he had allegedly killed a man and wounded a woman in an attempted hijacking incident.

The victim was in his vehicle with his girlfriend on Ferguson Road when they were attacked on Sunday, Rising Sun Overport reported.

The suspect shot and killed the driver, 35, while his girlfriend was wounded. She was taken to hospital for treatment. The suspect fled the scene after the incident.

An Umbilo police officer who was in the vicinity heard about the incident and was given a description of the suspect. The police officer saw the man who fit the description running along Brand Road, not far away from the murder scene.

He gave chase, and eventually, he managed to apprehend the suspect.

The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm suspected to be the same one used in the crime. He was arrested and will be charged for murder, attempted murder, attempted hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson said: “Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that two people had sustained gunshot wounds. A man in his 30s had sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper body.

“Paramedics assessed him, but unfortunately there was nothing more paramedics could do, and he was declared dead at the scene. A woman in her 20s also sustained a gunshot wound to her lower extremities in the same incident.”

The suspect, 25, will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon facing murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
