About 20 people were held hostage by five armed men on a smallholding in Knoppieslaagte, Centurion, on Thursday morning.

The men infiltrated the staff living quarters on the smallholding at about 4am armed with pistols and a tyre iron, Rekord Centurion reported.

Orange Fox Security spokesperson Ruan Heyns said: “They woke the staff up unit by unit and rounded them up in a large room.”

Heyns said the men held one staff member at gunpoint while they cleaned out the units.

“They robbed approximately 20 staff members and fled the scene after assaulting eight of the staff members with the tyre iron,” Heyns said.

The staff members who were assaulted were transported to hospital with minor injuries, he said.

Heyns said the robbers fled with money as well as cellphones and electronics and are still at large.

The staff members had been held hostage for two hours.
