The man reportedly was violent towards his wife and the dog bit his finger, upon which he stabbed the dog six times.

A man has been arrested after he stabbed his dog to death in Mooikloof Ridge in Pretoria.

According to Wetnose Animal Rescue’s inspector Jacques van der Merwe, the dog bit the owner after he became violent with his wife on Wednesday, Rekord East reported.

“It is alleged that the dog owner got into an argument with his wife to which the dog reacted by becoming aggressive [against him]. The dog bit his finger,” he said.

The angry owner then stabbed it six times with a knife. Van der Merwe said the Wetnose centre received a call from a creche in Mooikloof reporting the horrific act.

“The dog owner’s children had informed their teachers about the incident. We found the dog wrapped in a plastic bag in the house. The dog was alive at the time but later succumbed to its injuries,” he added.

“It’s a problem in our society where violent people abuse children, women and animals. Something needs to be done to ensure the safety of our animals,” he said.

Van der Merwe said the dog owner was arrested and would be charged with animal cruelty.
