A woman was killed when her bakkie collided head-on with a truck on the N11 in Sunset Rest outside Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday night, paramedics said.
ER24 paramedics, along with provincial services, arrived on the scene and found the wrecked bakkie in the middle of the road.
The heavy truck had pulled over to the emergency lane some distance away, E24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.
“When paramedics inspected the bakkie they found the body of a woman lying trapped inside the vehicle. Further assessments showed the woman presented with no signs of life. Unfortunately, the patient had already succumbed to her multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for her and she was declared dead on [the] scene.”
The driver of the truck was assessed and found to have escaped injury, Meiring said.
Meanwhile, a boy believed to be 10-years-old is in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a car in an apparent hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Olivenhout and Albertina Sisulu roads in Bosmont, Johannesburg, on Saturday afternoon.
“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the young patient lying in one of the smaller roads next to the intersection,” Meiring said.
On assessment, paramedics found that the boy had sustained serious injuries to his head, chest, and abdomen, leaving him in a critical condition. Paramedics initiated advanced life support interventions and stabilised the boy before he was transported to Johannesburg General Hospital for urgent treatment.
“The vehicle in question was apparently not found on the scene. Local authorities were on [the] scene for further investigations,” Meiring said.
