The EMPD says the municipality apparently promised the residents houses and these had not been delivered.

Residents of the Makause informal settlement in Primrose near Germiston took to the streets in a service delivery protest on Wednesday.

Stanley, Pretoria, Shamrock and Main Reef roads around the settlement were blocked off by rocks and piles of burning rubbish and tyres, Germiston City News reported.

EMPD officers stationed themselves at all the intersections to warn motorists and redirect traffic away from the area.

The communications officer for the Ekurhuleni West SAPS cluster, Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said: “By the look of things, the protest is service delivery related.

“From what we understand, the municipality promised them houses and this has not been delivered,” he added.

Nhlabathi said no acts of violence had been reported and there had been no injuries.

Currently, there is a strong EMPD and SAPS presence in the area.
