UPDATE: Screwdriver attacker succumbs to his injuries

The police officer has since been released from hospital.

The man who stabbed a police officer several times with a screwdriver in Knysna, Western Cape this morning, has died after he succumbed to his wounds.

The deceased was shot by the officer after he stabbed the officer during an argument, Knysna-Plett Herald reported.

The incident happened at about 07:40am in front of a local pharmacy and other shops in the town centre.

Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said the police officer was called out to the scene after a fight had broken out between two men.

“An argument arose between the policeman and one of the men when one of them stabbed the policeman several times with the screwdriver. The policemen then shot him. Both were rushed to two different Knysna hospitals.”

The police oficer, who had been stabbed in the head among other places, has since been released from hospital.

The deceased’s name cannot be released until his relatives have been informed of his death

Southern Cape Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie confirmed the fatality.
