Kagiso police on the West Rand have discovered the body of a 12-year-old boy with his lips cut off in an open veld in Rietvallei.

The gruesome discovery followed a complaint by a member of the community on Tuesday, Krugersdorp News reported.

“Sector police members on patrol received a complaint from a concerned member of the community in Swaneville. They proceeded to the scene of the crime. Upon arrival at the scene they found a witness who then showed them the body of the boy lying in an open veld,” Kagiso Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

Sibiya said the boy, who is from Orlando in Soweto, frequently visited his aunt who lives in Kagiso and was known to leave her house without saying a word.

“When the boy went missing from his aunt’s house on Saturday, they did not think anything of it and assumed that he had gone back home as he has done before. Little did they know that he became the victim of a brutal crime,” he added.

The boy sustained an open wound to his right cheek and his lips were removed.

Although the motive for the murder is unknown, Kagiso police are investigating further.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the murder may have a muti-ritual motive.
