Two armed robbers have been shot and killed at a Van Riebeeck Park in Kempton, on the East Rand.

Ekurhuleni North Cluster police spokesperson Constable Mokete Serakwana said the incident took place at around 8pm on De Villiers Street, Kempton Express reported.

“The owner of the house was sitting on the veranda with a friend when two suspects appeared and pointed firearms at them, ordering them into the house,” added Serakwana.

She said the house was dark inside as the four entered. The owner, believed to be in his 40s, managed to reach for his gun behind a clock.

“When the suspects noticed there was movement from the victims in the dark, it is alleged they fired shots but missed. The owner of the house shot the one suspect in the house. The other suspect tried to flee the scene but was shot outside,” Serakwana added.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said both men were in their twenties

He added paramedics were called to the scene by members of the local community policing forum.

“On arrival, paramedics were led onto the premises were they found the body of one man lying in the garden while the second lay inside the home. On assessment, paramedics found that both men had sustained fatal injuries in the shooting.

“Nothing more could be done and they were both declared dead on the scene,” said Meiring.

Serakwana said cases of attempted house robbery, attempted murder, possession of ammunition and an inquest docket were being investigated.
