A security guard was shot during an attempted break-in at the Telkom Mobile store at the Shelly Centre in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.
The robbery was foiled by the centre’s security guards.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said three men entered the centre at about 3am. Two of the men were armed, one with a crowbar and the other with a handgun, South Coast Herald reported.
“A shot was fired which struck a security guard in the neck. The robbers then proceeded to smash the window of the Telkom store, however nothing was taken,” he said.
“Thankfully the security guard’s injuries are not fatal and a full recovery is expected,” said Shelly Centre’s marketing manager, Tessa Apostolides.
She added the management at the centre is extremely proud of the security staff and praised their brave intervention and quick thinking.
The robbers fled in a white VW Polo with ND registration plates. No arrests have yet been made.
