A woman in her late twenties was killed after being thrown out of a moving vehicle and run over in the south of Johannesburg, allegedly by her boyfriend, at the weekend.

Booysens police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik said the man had thrown her out of his moving Bantam bakkie on Kliprivier Drive near the N12 at around 11pm on Saturday. He then turned around, rode over her and dragged her for about 150 metres before he fled the scene, Comaro Chronicle reported.

The woman was alive when emergency services arrived at the scene but she later succumbed to her injuries.

“I distinctly heard a vehicle braking hard, wheels spinning and then what sounded like a shot but it could have been a car backfiring. This was at around 11:15pm. I had a gut feeling something awful had happened and when I looked out of the window not long after, I saw ambulance lights. This is a terrible tragedy,” a resident from Gillview who wished to remain anonymous said.

While no arrests have been made, a case of murder is under investigation, Van Emmerik said.
