Police have launched a manhunt after two women were allegedly gang raped by seven suspects in Tshepisong, in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand.
It is believed the women and their male friend were walking in an open space when they were accosted by the alleged gang armed with knives and pangas on Sunday night, Krugersdorp News reported.
The women tried to flee, but were caught by one of the suspects.
“All seven suspects took turns raping the woman. The victims’ male friend was also undressed and their cell phones were taken,” said Kagiso Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.
Sibiya said this was the second incident where victims were ambushed, robbed and ended up being raped by more than one suspect in Tshepisong. The first incident happened in December where a woman was ambushed, robbed and raped by six suspects.
“It is now time for residents of Tshepisong to stand up as one and report these suspects. They are from within Tshepisong, so someone may have noticed them before or after the incident. We want to continue to warn residents, especially women, not to walk in open and dark areas at night. Rather use the streets where you are visible and there is at least safety in numbers,” said Station Commander of Kagiso Police station Brigadier Sipho Ngubane.
Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward or call Kagiso police on 011 696 9000/ 9068/ 9070. Investigations are ongoing.
This after the dead body of a woman in her twenties was found lying in the tall grass on the corner of Hendrick Potgieter and Cascades roads in Roodepoort, Johannesburg on Good Friday.
According to police spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu confirmed police were called to the scene by a local security guard.
“Her body was found half naked, the officers suspect that she was first raped and then murdered,” Mngomezulu said.
He could not confirm how she was murdered but that a case of murder and rape has been opened at the Honeydew police station.
