North fashion designer heading to Paris

A local fashion designer from Mabopane in the north of Pretoria is heading to France later this year to showcase his work.

Kagiso Mac Mashilo (29) is the head designer and owner of Melerine & Rose International.

Born in Klipgat, Mashilo said he was inspired from an early age by his hardworking parents, both from Limpopo.

“From a very early age my family allowed me to dream and pursue all those dreams,” he said.

“Both working in the informal sector, they influenced me to understand humanity, have respect and to know my roots.”

Mashilo attended primary school in Refentse and high school in Hebron Technical and Commercial.

He would go on to study fashion design at the Tshwane North College.

Driven by the desire for success, he soon realised that he had the potential of starting his own business.

Mashilo hopes his work in fashion will also help Mabopane to become a destination for tourists.

He is also passionate when it comes to giving back to the community.

“I have worked with Mrs Makgofe Moagi, Charity from Skeem Saam and recently I designed a collection to raise funds for a community orphanage in Winterveldt.”

In September of this year, Mashilo will be showcasing his work at the Paris Fashion Week at The Ritz Hotel at Vendome.

“The renowned hotel has hosted a variety of global superstar designers like Coco Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Lady Diana,” Mashilo said.

“Paris is the destination for fashion and my vision is to establish my design to be recognised globally.”
