Local fashion designer dresses Miss SA

Our very own Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane in a house of Agrie couture hand-beaded dress.

A local fashion designer made a beautiful dress during the pandemic for Miss SA 2021 Lalela Mswane.

Fashion designer, Dumisane Zwane (33) from Mamelodi West, section D5, known as Agrippa said he was happy to see the dress he made worn by the current Miss SA.

He said the dress took him about nine months to finish and the beads on the dress were done one by one by hand.

Agrippa is the founder of House of Agrie couture events and décor.

He made the dress and showed the dress to a close friend, whom sent the pic to Miss SA. She loved it.

Agrippa recalls nervously going to meet Mswane for alteration on the dress and describes her as a lovely person.

“His love for fashion design was inspired by his role model and mother, Thandi Makhubela, who always was on her sewing machine every day after work.”

Mamelodi fashion designer, Agrippa made a dress for Miss SA 2021, Lalela Mswane.

He said his mother used to do curtains and clothing alterations for neighbours and community members and that made him fall in love with fashion design in the year 2009.

“My first design was my worn-out trousers. My mother was out and I started playing around with her sewing machine and ended up fixing my own trousers,” said Agrippa.

Besides that, he grew up loving to draw sketches and he loved beads.

“The Ndebele tenants my mother use to have at home taught me a lot about beads as well as designing crafts with beads.”

Agrippa holds a national diploma in fashion design and on his first year at TUT he was nominated as one of the finalists for the young designer finalists for the Durban July.

In the community he has done weddings and traditional gowns, men’s tailored suits and evening gowns,

He was also a guest lecture for four months at the fashion department at TUT.

His goal in life is to grow his brand and reach a lot of people locally and internationally.

Agrippa encouraged young fashion designers not to give up despite the challenges and to remember the most important thing in fashion design is to always perfect your craft.
