Young girl creates dreams with wool

“Today I make clothing for people who are not afraid to look unique and who’s not afraid to stand out from the crowd,”

Meet young Chante Moagi (19) from Mamelodi West, Sunvalley who found her true potential of being creative in wool and sewing.

The young girl said her passion to create anything with wool started at an early age when she used to plait her hair with wool.

She always loved clothing and wanted to create her own statement with clothes.

“Today I make clothing for people who are not afraid to look unique and who’s not afraid to stand out from the crowd,” said Chante.

“As I grew up I realised my potential of combining my clothing so it could look different and fun. Also, people loved that I can be versatile from streetwear to classic vintage wear.”

In 2020 she won the best dressmaker title at a fashion show called Run.these.streets that was held at The Village, Mamelodi West.

She said winning the best dressmaker title made her realise her full potential in making clothing.

“I fell in love with wool, not because I can’t get a sewing machine, but because I found a different, unique vibe from wool,” said Chante.

“I started off plaiting my hair with wool and just thought to myself how wool will look on my body.”

Chante said she sees art in clothing.

“I started off painting portraits and sketching some designs that I can create with wool.”

She loves how wool has many colours and how it makes her more creative because she can basically make anything out of it. From making amazing clothing to 3D portraits.

“Honestly, it made me love wool even more because I can explore my creative mind and make some cool art pieces.

“I didn’t even think wool can be made into clothing so I experimented with the many different colours that wool has and made a colourful jacket that had lots of people going crazy for it,” she said.

“I find it easy to work with many colours because I love the variety.”

Many people love her work and she has designed clothing anyone from plus-sized to skinny people, both male and female.

Chante said she caters to everyone.

“Working with wool made me believe anything is possible. I can make anything out of wool,” she concluded.
