What’s new at the movies?

New movies for film lovers available this week.

Families and kids of all ages can look forward to the return of Dora the Explorer to select Nu Metro cinemas in Pretoria this weekend. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has the ever-popular hero preparing for her most terrifying adventure ever—high school.

Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B are among the ensemble of stars in Hustlers – a scandalous drama showing how a group of exotic dancers gets back at disrespectful clients.

Nu Metro has a wealth of homegrown gems opening for Heritage Month, and this week is no exception. The new movie based on the iconic Dalene Matthee novel loved by generations, Fiela Se Kind, is showing at select cinemas. This touching story follows Fiela Komoetie, a coloured woman living in the arid Karoo, who finds a lost white child on her doorstep and takes him in, raising him as her own. Losing Lerato is a dramatic thriller showing how a father decides to kidnap his daughter from his estranged wife, and ends up in a hostage situation, after all legal recourse fails.

Bookings are now open for the special pre-release screenings of The Angry Birds Movie 2 this Saturday, 14 September (select shows). While she’s spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora for her most terrifying adventure ever—high school. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego, a mysterious jungle inhabitant, and a rag tag group of teens on an adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Pea) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost city of gold.

Girls from a group of exotic dancers get their revenge on wealthy, drunk and abusive clients by maxing out their credit cards after they’ve passed out. The film is inspired by the article published by New York Magazine entitled “The Hustlers at Scores” written by Jessica Pressler.

FIELA SE KIND (13 LPV)

Suidelike Afrika, 1865. Wanneer Fiela, ’n hardwerkende bruin vrou, ’n driejarige wit seuntie op haar voorstoep ontdek, het haar besluit om hom in te neem langdurige gevolge vir haar en die kind. Na ’n dekade in Fiela se sorg, word Benjamin raakgesien deur regeringsowerhede en word hy weggeneem van haar, en terugbesorg aan die wit familie van houtkappers waarvandaan hulle glo hy kom. Verwyder deur die gereg en afstand, spandeer Fiela en Benjamin die volgende dekade om mekaar op te spoor terwyl hulle terselfdertyd vrede maak met hulle individuele identiteite. Fiela het ’n seun verloor en verval geleidelik in depressie, ’n gemoedstoestand wat verder vererger word deur die mishandeling wat sy ondervind aan die hand van die gereg en Benjamin se nuwe pa terwyl sy hom probeer opspoor. Benjamin, aan die ander kant, word gewerp in ’n verarmde omgewing waarin hy mishandel word, een waarin hy geforseer word om ’n nuwe identiteit aan te neem terwyl hy sy eie onderdruk.

LOSING LERATO (13 LV)

Thami has recently lost his job at a top firm following fraud allegations. This is the last straw for his wife, who, fearing a drop in her living standard, abandons her marriage, taking their daughter, Lerato, with her. Thami is desperate to maintain a relationship with his daughter, while Noluthando does everything in her power to ensure that he’s denied access to his child. After exhausting all legal recourse, and desperate to be reunited with his daughter, Thami kidnaps Lerato from school. Thami’s actions put his life, and that of Lerato and bystanders, in danger—and leads to a high-stakes hostage situation on a bus.
