Antique lovers, collectors flock to east fair

It was the second fair held at the Brooklyn Squares after moving from Sunnyside in 2018.

Hundreds of antique lovers and collectors flocked to the bi-annual rooftop antique fair at the Brooklyn Square on Wednesday.

Organiser Yolanda Gibbon said around 90 stalls were set up at the fair’s second market at the new venue in the east of Pretoria.

“We held it at the Melrose House museum in Sunnyside for 25 years but the crime got a little tough.”

She said the first-ever market at the Brooklyn Square was held in December 2018.

“A lot of people from the Pretoria area at large say they can find anything here,” Gibbon said.

Co-hosts of the event, the Tshwane SPCA said they partnered with Gibbon so they could raise funds.

“What we sell here today are items we collect from the public throughout the year,” Riaan Visser said.

He said they collected items from people who were either downsizing, emigrating or just wanted to get rid of some of their belongings.

“That’s why we always say to the public they shouldn’t just throw things out because they don’t have value to them.

“There’s always a collector who’s looking for what you might have,” Visser said.

He said the money raised from the fair went towards covering their overhead costs.

“We still have to cover our rent, electricity, salaries of the staff and so forth so the income from this event goes towards that,” Visser said.
