Eersterust woman set for overseas talent show

Candice Engelbrecht was one of the lucky few chosen to go to New York and Florida to showcase her talent.

She is not only a mother of two, but at the age of 36 a resident of Eersterust will represent South Africa in a talent competition overseas later this year.

Candice Engelbrecht was one of the lucky people chosen to go to New York and Florida to showcase her talent and attend workshops in front of various agencies.

This follows an audition she did in front of artists and talent scouts such as Kim Meyers, Nate Butler and Blaze Johnson in October last year.

“I am excited and nervous at the same time. It will also be my first time overseas,” she said.

Engelbrecht told Rekord that various talents will be showcased at the competition, such as acting, modelling, singing and dancing.

She said entrants stand a chance to get record deals, while some are even selected to study at the New York Film Academy.

This is not the only competition Engelbrecht is taking part in.

She is also competing in the Face of Just You Agency competition.

“If I win, I will get to compete in an international modelling competition and I will also be the face of the agency,” Engelbrecht explained.

“We are judged by votes from the public and how active we are on social media,” she said.

Currently Engelbrecht is in 37th place.

Engelbrecht, a commercial model, told Rekord she knew she wanted to be a model when she was very young.

“I did not want to be a fashion model because you had to be a certain weight and height,” she said.

She has done a couple of commercials and movie castings.

When Engelbrecht was 21, she tried to kick start her modelling career with a professional photo shoot.

“While we were busy compiling a portfolio for me, I fell pregnant,” she said.

“After that, I started focusing on my studies and worked on my professional career, but modelling always remained at the back of my mind.”

Six years after Engelbrecht had her second child, she made another attempt at a modelling career.

“A lot of agencies rejected me, so I thought I should just leave it,” she said.

Last year, she tried one last time and, shortly afterwards, two agencies phoned her for interviews.

“Everything happened so fast,” she said.

Since then, Engelbrecht did a professional photo shoot and entered the talent and agency competitions.

“I even got a call back for the Silverstar Casino fashion show,” she said.

“I just could not believe that it was finally happening.”

However, she said she needed sponsors and donations to be able to go overseas.

She is asking for help to do so.

Engelbrecht grew up in Laudium and attended primary school there.

In 1997, her family relocated to Eersterust after her mother remarried.

She attended Clapham High School until 1998.

Engelbrecht is also involved with Grooming Boys in Eersterust, which helps young boys in the area acquire various life skills.
