VIDEO: Meet London-based songstress Anna Wolf

She credits growing up in Pretoria for finding her voice as an artist and if you haven't heard Anna Wolf's debut single, you better give it a listen.

If you haven’t heard local songstress Anna Wolf’s recently released debut single Believer yet, you are missing out.

Although now based in London, the former Centurion resident credits Pretoria, where she spent most of her young life, for finding her voice as an artist.

Her debut song delves into her own turbulent early life and her refusal to become the victim of her circumstance.

Believer was inspired by the need to break the silence over domestic violence.

She was born in Pretoria to a nurturing mother and a troubled father and her childhood was often a nomadic existence with her father’s demons forcing the family to leave town at a moment’s notice.

“Believer speaks of empowerment and the need to break the silence on domestic violence.

It speaks of people moving through life in a narcissistic manner not thinking or not having the ability to think of the repercussion of their actions.

She says she wants people “who are affected by domestic violence to manifest the ability and subconscious power to move out of the darkness and into the light.”

“As a child, I hid a lot, either under beds or in trees. I escaped by using my hands and body to melt and hide into my own skin.

She used music to escape.

“Music became my armour, my strength. Soon enough, I realised that it was safe for my skin to come out and breath,” Anna explains the song.

“Believer was the first single I wrote where I could completely and utterly be myself and vulnerable enough to find the strength to talk about my past. All my latest works are inspired by real-life events and being okay in being venerable,” she says.

She started singing at a very young age and remembers being 12 years old when she asked for a guitar for her birthday – which she ended up getting.

“I took a few guitar lessons and started writing my very first few songs. The songs I wrote back then were all kinds of random and adventurous topics…. It feels like just the other day,” Anna laughs.

Her very first performance was at a modelling contest in Johannesburg when she was 14 years old.

She was the opening act.

“I distinctly remember myself wearing super tight jeans and a crop top. When it came to fashion, the early 2000s was a very bad and interesting time for me…..haha,” she adds.

Anna has since planted roots in London, saying she wanted to reach a bigger audience.

“Anna Wolf is ready to take over the world one performance at a time,” she explains.

“Without growing up in an ever-expanding city such as Pretoria, I don’t think I would have had the same frame of mind to break into something bigger.

I am the kind of person who enjoys movement and change. If I don’t feel like I am growing or expanding my mind, I stagnate and feel lost.

Growing up in a small town (compared to London) gives you the ability to either settle or the need to find something bigger. I choose to always find something bigger, keeping in mind the importance of staying in the now and being present,” she says.

Anna describes her music as “Hauntingly beautiful alternative music. It’s Anna Wolf, I think that the name almost speaks for itself.”
