Thousands walk and run to remember Mandela
After the walk and run, participants danced the morning away.
Thousands of walkers and runners painted streets in the city centre orange as they participated in the annual Mandela remembrance walk and run on Sunday morning.
The walk and run was the final official event celebrating and commemorating the former president’s centenary year.
“The Mandela remembrance walk and run is the perfect ending to a memorable year and is a family event open to all,” said Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang.
After the walk and run, participants who still had some energy left danced the morning away.
The highlight during the festivities was when hit song Malwedhe played and participants did the so-called ‘fainting’ dance.
City mayor Solly Msimanga was also in attendance for the wreath-laying ceremony.
“We want to thank all South Africans and the global community for the warm, wonderful manner in which they’ve embraced the Mandela centenary celebrations,” said Hatang.
“It’s been a phenomenal, humbling year which has paid fitting tribute to Maria’s legacy.”
Gauteng sports, arts, culture and recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko said the province was honoured to have played an important role in the Mandela centenary celebrations.
